Nursery Art and Decore - Almost Done!

A while back I featured my kids' rooms. It has been a while since I have touched much in either room, but I did have an unfinished project in Baby Boo's room: more wall decorations.

Since creating the room (way back when I was a giant preggo ), I had planned to put up frames and maybe some art on this bare wall:

I bought a few frames back when I first started buying accessories for the room, and have since collected a few more. I didn't do a whole lot other than collect frames for a long time, and the wall remained empty.

I guess the dining room wall project of mine finally kicked my butt in gear to work on this project. So, I started really thinking about what I wanted to fill the various frames with.

The first piece was a cross stitch that my MIL made for Baby Boo when she was born. That was already completed and just waiting to be hung since Baby Boo was born:

It got to wait patiently on a shelf for over a year.

I knew I wanted several photos of Baby Boo and our family on her wall, so I went online to Mpix.com and placed an order. I ordered several from our family portraits that were taken this past September, and I ordered a couple from her newborn photo shoot too. The newborn shots were placed in the colorful Cynthia Rowley photo frames that I had scored at Home Goods (pictured on the right). I ordered them in the metallic paper that Mpix offers. If you haven't seen this for yourself you should really try it since online photos can't do it justice. I also ordered a pop art like print in the metallic paper to add a slightly more abstract element to the collection:

I knew I wanted to add some more non-photo elements, so I went to my favorite source of inspiration, Pinterest! There I looked through some things that I had tagged and came up with this:

It looked easy enough so I grabbed a piece of white cardstock (I went irridescent), a bunch of buttons that coordinate with the room, and my trusty hot glue gun. I hand drew an H onto the cardstock, and filled it in with buttons. I really was that simple. It took about an hour to finish and I think it turned out pretty nice:

Next up on the Pinterest hunt, I came across a pretty technique called quilling. Quilling is a paper artform where strips of paper are rolled, shaped, and glued to make beautiful designs. I searched for quilling on Pinterest and came up with some gorgeous designs:

I fell in love with the amazingly elaborate designs and descided to give it a try. I found a couple of You Tube video tutorials that quickly explained what I needed and I ordered a quilling board and tool off of Amazon, as well as some paper strips. Once they arrived I got going on it.

It was a LOOOOOONG tedious process. Quilling is only for those that really like fine detail work. Luckily, I enjoy that kind of thing in small doses. It took me a couple of months to complete because I would get sick of it and set it aside for sometimes weeks at a time. It didn't help that I went with as complex of a design as I possibly could have.

Eventually. . . I did finish. I winged the whole thing beyond the intro tutorial videos, and I don't think it came out half bad considering:

The caption to this pin was something along the lines of "paint a cheap plaque from Michael and Modge Podge a photo onto it". It sounded like a great idea. I tried to find a tutorial on this and instead found that these are frames sold by a company called The Organic Bloom. They have absolutely gorgeous frames, but only work through professional photographers, and are rather spendy to boot. I figure I will give the Modge Podge method a try after all and hopefully I can come up with something similar. Stay tuned for that. In the meantime, I printed the print I want for that project and temporarily taped it onto the wall so I could arrange everything.


Finally. . .

Here is the wall before and after:

 Nothing too crazy, but I think it is a nice addition to the room.

I hung everything using 3M Command strips, and it worked out great. I love that I didn't have to make any holes in the wall. I think I will hang pretty much everything I can using them in the future.
